Leakage to the Left

Some sentences that show some leakage of dependent clause words out in front of the subordinating conjunction.

  • Caesarī cum id nuntiātum esset, maturāvit ab urbe proficisci. (J. Caesar, BG 1.7 adapted; LfR BS 34.1)
  • Duo cum faciunt idem, non est idem. When two do the same thing, it isn't the same (i.e. one can get away with doing something while another cannot.) (Terentius, Adelphoe)
  • Nīl agit exemplum, lītem quod līte resolvit.
  • Pretiosa quam sit sanitas, morbus docet. (Latin Via Proverbs 2786)
  • Pudor sī quem nōn flectit, nōn frangit timor. (Publilius Syrus, Sententiae, letter P, verse 45)
