Greek-Middle Passives

Some sentences that show a reflexive use of the passive voice, similar to the Greek middle voice. The construction is limited to articles of clothing and body parts. (Highlighting is limited to verb + object whenever feasible.)

  • Aeneas maestō defixus lumina vultū (Vergil Aen. 6.156)
  • ardentīsque oculōs suffectī sanguine et ignī (Vergil Aen. 2.210)
  • Dixit, et os impressa torō, "Moriēmur inultae, sed moriāmus," ait. (Vergil Aen. 4.659-660)
  • inutile ferrum cingitur (Vergil Aen. 2.510-511)
  • Maeoniā mentum mitrā crīnemque madentem subnexus (Vergil Aen. 4.216-217)
  • nuda genu nodōque sinūs collecta fluentīs (Vergil Aen. 1.320)
  • Tandem progreditur magnā stipante catervā Sidoniam pictō chlamydem circumdata limbō (Vergil Aen. 4.136-137)
  • tristēs et tunsae pectora palmīs (Vergil Aen. 1.481)
